serge-hand-knotted-limited-edition-rug
Edition 03: Serge — Limited Edition Rug

Jean Royère spent the early 1930s learning the trade in the cabinet workshops of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and then at Gouffé, a house that made reproductions of eighteenth-century French furniture. It was Pierre Gouffé who pushed him to show at the Salon d'Automne in 1934. By 1937 he was a member of the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and had built seventeen room sets for the Exposition Internationale that year.

The motif he came back to most was a grid of thin rods with a small gilt sphere set at each intersection. He called it Tour Eiffel, after the trestles of the tower, and used it on stools, table bases, mirror frames and architectural grilles, including his work for the French consulate in Alexandria in 1948.

The Serge follows that logic. An ivory lattice runs edge to edge across a blue-grey ground with a point of pale yellow gold at every crossing, held inside a fine border. There is no centre and nothing to necessarily fix on.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, in New Zealand wool and bamboo silk.

At 180 x 240cm.
