Hubert Gerhard — Mercury Bronze Sculpture, c.1600

Hubert Gerhard’s Mercury captures the Roman messenger god in a moment of poised motion — a figure suspended between myth and movement.

This bronze, attributed to Gerhard (c.1550–1620), echoes the elegance of Giambologna’s celebrated model while filtering its dynamism through Northern European sensibilities. Likely cast in Munich between 1600 and 1610, the sculpture reflects the refined anatomical precision and expressive vitality that characterised Gerhard’s work for the Wittelsbach court.

The figure’s elongated proportions and spiralling gesture embody the late Renaissance fascination with movement, balance and sculptural rhythm. The dark patina of the bronze further enhances the sense of depth and drama, revealing the technical mastery of early modern European bronze casting.
