The Anton takes its name from Anton Zwemmer (1892–1979) — a tall, elegant Dutchman who opened his legendary bookshop at 78 Charing Cross Road in 1924, and with it, helped keep the modern spirit alive in London between the wars. Art historians, artists, collectors and the simply curious came to Zwemmer's — then the only major art bookshop in the city. In 1929 he opened Gallery Zwemmer around the corner, which became a meeting place for a cross-section of the art world, showing Britain's first completely non-representational exhibition, its first Dalí, the Surrealist group show of 1940, and major exhibitions of Picasso, Miró and de Chirico. He was a friend and patron of artists from Picasso to Henry Moore.

The rug reflects that world. A grid of receding squares set against a deep, almost nocturnal ground — rigorous, precise, held in tension by the luminous warmth of bamboo silk. It is a study in control and restraint, where repetition becomes rhythm. A Bauhaus logic rendered in wool and light.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, the Anton is worked over many weeks in New Zealand wool and bamboo silk — a combination chosen for its exceptional depth of colour, its natural lustre, and the particular softness underfoot that only this blend achieves.
