Three Jeans informed the making of this rug. Jean Desprès — the French jeweller and silversmith whose severe, almost industrial forms brought a new kind of beauty to the decorative arts of the 1920s and 30s. Jean Prouvé — the engineer-designer whose conviction that beauty and function were inseparable produced some of the most enduring furniture of the twentieth century. And Jean-Michel Frank — the Parisian decorator whose interiors achieved a stripped, almost monastic luxury that remains the benchmark for a certain kind of refined restraint.

The rug holds all three. A bold circle and vertical bar at the top — sculptural, Desprès-like in its confidence. Fine horizontal lines at the centre, precise as a Prouvé construction drawing. A checkerboard below, a nod to Frank's love of pattern used with absolute control. Each element is distinct; together they form something that feels less like a rug and more like a composition — a work on paper translated into wool and silk.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, the Jean is made from New Zealand wool and bamboo silk. The silk gives the checker and line elements a fine directional sheen that distinguishes them from the flat wool ground — a subtle textural contrast only visible up close.

At 180 x 240cm, the Jean works particularly well in a dining room, study or hallway — spaces where its graphic quality can be appreciated across a distance.
