Edition 03: Jardin — Limited Edition Rug

The rinceau — from the old French rain, a branch with foliage — is among the oldest continuous motifs in European ornament. It appears throughout classical antiquity, across the Gothic period and into the Renaissance. The seventeenth century pulled it back towards classical order. Then the eighteenth loosened it again, treating the scroll far more freely and abandoning the rigid repetition of identical forms.

That eighteenth-century freedom is where Jardin sits. An ivory white line wanders across a warm, mink grey ground, curling back on itself, carrying small blossoms at the turns.

The rinceau is the ornament of the salon. Consider the stem that runs across a painted panel, or a length of hand-painted paper, or the embroidery on a dress. The great Paris rooms were built to open onto a terrace or a garden, and this is the motif that travelled between the two spaces.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, in New Zealand wool and bamboo silk.
