Eileen Gray was one of the most original designers of the twentieth century — and one of the least understood during her lifetime. Born in Ireland in 1878, she taught herself lacquerwork in London, moved to Paris, and over the following decades produced furniture, interiors and architecture of such quiet radicalism that it took the world decades to catch up. Her rugs — made in the 1920s and 30s for her own interiors and a handful of private clients — were among the first abstract textiles made in Europe, and remain among the most beautiful.

The Gray is made in her spirit. A soft celadon ground carrying a regular grid of cream squares, each marked with a single dark point — the measured geometry of a mind that understood that true luxury lies not in ornament but in proportion. It has the quality of something very old seen clearly for the first time.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, the Gray is worked in New Zealand wool and bamboo silk. The bamboo silk introduces a delicate luminosity to the pale ground — not a shine, but a presence, a sense that the surface holds light rather than merely reflecting it.

At 180 x 240cm, the Gray sits comfortably in almost any interior. It is the rug that doesn't announce itself — it simply makes everything around it feel more considered.
