The Josef takes its name and its logic from Josef Albers — the Bauhaus master who spent a lifetime investigating how one colour behaves inside another. How a square can expand or contract, advance or recede, depending entirely on what surrounds it. His series Homage to the Square, begun in 1950 and continued for the rest of his life, remains one of the most rigorous and quietly radical bodies of work in modern art.

The rug translates that enquiry into wool and silk. Rows of pale aqua squares recede into a deep indigo field; a single pale rectangle floats above the composition like an open window, or a thought held just before it resolves. It is simultaneously rigorous and warm — the kind of design that reveals more the longer you look at it.

Hand-knotted at 100 knots per square inch by Goodweave-certified artisans in Nepal, the Josef is made from New Zealand wool and bamboo silk. The silk catches light differently from every angle, giving the indigo ground a richness that shifts between blue, black and dark green across the course of a day — an effect Albers himself would have understood immediately.

At 180 x 240cm, the Josef works in a living room, study or bedroom — anywhere that calls for something considered rather than merely decorative.
